In Feb, 2009 dedicated Somali medical and allied science students and doctors in Pakistan formed the Somali Medical Union (SMU). SMU is a professional organisation established to look after the professional and personal needs of our members. The SMU represents students of medical and allied science, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, lab techs, nurses and other health professionals in Pakistan.

SMU is nonprofit Entity free from any political and racial persuasions and its main activities are directed towards improving institution through awareness and teamwork mobilization.

SMU exists to:
• Promote professional relationship between the Somali students of medical science and the practicing doctors in Pakistan.
• Serve as an educational resource and guide the Somali students studying in the field of medicine and allied science in Pakistan as well as in Somalia.
• Form local chapters in each and every college/university in Pakistan.
• Enhance the medical knowledge of all members by providing a forum for getting together, exchanging experiences and networking.
• Provide free medical assistance where possible to needy Somalis in Pakistan.
