Half Somali home and ADHD/ODD
« on: March 02, 2009, 10:16:02 PM »
Assalamu Alaikum my dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

Before I ask my question, I'd like to give a little background info.  I am a Canadian revert.  I have been married to my Somali husband for 15 years.  My oldest son was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD.  This diagnosis was made by many doctors here in Canada and in Saudi.
It took years for my husband to even allow me to get him tested.  According to him, there is no such thing as ADHD and ODD.  Other Somalis have said the same.  My question is, do most Somalis think this way?  If you thought this way, has your opinion changed once you were educated about it?

Thank you
Amina

Walaikum Assalam. May Allah strengthen your faith in Him and protect you from misguidance.

Before i answer your question, i want to tell everyone that i am not Somali, so my comment is not likely to be biased.

Secondly, why do you attribute your husbands stubbornness to other Somalis? Do you think if i happened to meet a stubborn Canadian i would go around asking other Canadians if all Canadians are like that would be logical or rational thinking?

Thirdly, what kind of test did you want your husband to do to that was related to your child's disorder?! Since when has ADHD started to be diagnosed from something in the parents?

You need to reconsider your view about other people.

Assalamu Alaikum

Since you are not Somali, there really isn't a reason for you to reply!

That was a comment i thought necessary to make.
It was the logic i was criticizing and not a reply to the post.

I wonder why the "Somalis" didn't reply to your important query?!

A.S.C

If most Somalis think like this? I doubt it. We're all different and think differently! I've seen Somali children diagnosed ADHD or with other hyperactivity disorders that are on medication. The child can have trouble paying attention, or being ''over-active'', impulsive etc.. The best thing is to see a doctor and get the right diagnoses (which type of disorder your child may have, if he/she needs medication or psychologic help ++). There is no need to be in denial, ''ashamed'', or whatever, you are just doing your child a favour.

may I ask.. if you don't mind,
how does your husband explain the condition?

regards

The fact that your husband married a non-Somali is already a red flag that he doesn't think like other Somalis. Somalis are not accepting of inter-racial marriages. Second of all I completely agree with Aduka's comments.
