UWMC currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Somali Medical Interpreter 1. Medical Interpreters provide medical interpretation for patients and medical staff. The medical interpreter is responsible for ensuring that the thought, intent, and spirit of the messages are complete, culturally correct, and linguistically accurate. The medical interpreter carries out her/his work in compliance with departmental policies, procedures, standards of practice and code of ethics.

High school graduation or equivalent AND three years of interpretation experience with two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting AND Washington State Department of Social and Health Services certification or qualification OR equivalent education/experience. 
Strong team orientation. Successful track record in perinatal continuum. Translation skills a plus. Experience as a staff model interpreter a plus. Experience at a teaching hospital a plus. 
Condition of Employment:
Employee will work on an unscheduled basis. There is no specific shift. Some work will take place from Monday through Friday from 8 to 5, however staff is assigned to times of greatest patient demand. Due to high Labor and Delivery demand, the Somali interpreter must be available for some evening and weekend work, and must have transportation at these times.   

This classification is governed by a negotiated labor contract and is subject to union shop provisions upon the completion of 350 hours of work.
