Young cancer survivors face future hurdles
« on: September 22, 2009, 03:44:04 PM »
More than two-thirds of children who survive cancer go on to develop other serious and sometimes fatal illnesses later in life.

The Children's Cancer Institute Australia is embarking on the largest study into kids with cancer to look at how to stop this happening.

They believe genetic variations may be the key to why one survivor goes on to suffer from a treatment-related condition like chronic heart disease and another patient does not.

They will track the patients and monitor their genes.

Krystel Keller is taking part in the study. She lost her sight after developing cancer in the eyes when she was a baby.

Since her diagnosis, she has remained healthy, but many other childhood cancer survivors are not so lucky.
