Assalam alleykum all.
Uganda has quite some universities that offer medicine,among them;
Makerere university[http.www.makerere.ac.ug]
Kampala international university[http.www.kiu.ac.ug]
Gulu university[http.www.guluniv.ac.ug]
Mbarara university[http.www.must.ac.ug]
Makerere being the most recognized and the oldest higher learning institutions in the country,lies in the heart of the capital city,kampala.In the medical school of makerere,the following programs are offered
Bachelors in medicine and clinical surgery{MBCHB}
Bachelors in dental surgery{BDS}
Bachelors in pharmacy{BPH}
Bachelors in nursing{BNS}
Bachelors in medical radiography{BMR}
The education system of the country is of A-levels,compared to neighboring east African countries.Admission to the faculty of med is through certain cut off points that the university sets every time,depending on the national performance,though in addition they also give some chances to diploma holders of anything medically related
The medical school is under problem based curriculum[pbl]whereby students are divided into groups called tutorial groups,and a problem is introduced for the students to come up with learning objectives,which they will go read about it and come back the following day to resolve the objectives.in the end where they don't feel its not well understood,a wrap up seminar is organized for them.
Somali students we are currently three,of which two are finalists[5th yrs]under the program MBCHB,and me[3rd yr] doing BDS.

KAMPALA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY.
This university has its main campus in Kampala and its medical school in western campus in the west of Uganda,a place called bushenyi,ishaka.
there we a have a whole Somali community close to forty of them,among them are students from somaliland who are being sponsored by UNICEF.This campus is just newly opened,around 2005,and their first students are in their third year now.

i hope this info is gonna be usefull,otherwise for further info just check on the their respective web addresses.

They must however submit the University transcript(s).

 Historical Background

Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics. The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses. In 1949, it became a University College affiliated to the University College of London. In 1963 it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees of the University of London.

With the establishment of the University of East Africa on 29th June 1963, the special relationship with the University of London came to a close and degrees of the University of East Africa were instituted. On July 1, 1970, Makerere became an independent national university of the Republic of Uganda, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to its own awards.

How it looks todayToday Makerere University has twenty-two faculties/institutes/schools offering not only day but also evening and external study programmes to a student body of about 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates (both Ugandan and foreign). It is also a very active centre for research.

MBARARA UNIVERSITY

Faculty of Medicine

..

Faculty of Medicine was the first faculty, which started in October 1989 when Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) was founded. In line with its establishment objectives, Mbarara University admitted students for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. This was meant to enhance capacity building in an area relevant to building a sustainable economic development through empowerment of the graduates to participate effectively in determining policies, plan programmes and implement projects that are essential for sustained integrated economic growth and development.

The Faculty trains health professionals (Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and Medical Laboratory Scientists) who are acquainted with different working conditions and health needs of the society and therefore are prepared to work in rural as well as urban settings.

Training offered includes basic clinical sciences, broad laboratory and clinical skills and abilities, so that graduates are adequately prepared to work and willingly participate in community-based programmes irrespective of their location.

To achieve all these, the Faculty follows a Community Based Medical Education (CBME) programme, as its underlying philosophy. Right from the start, students are exposed to concepts about community problems which is the focus of students' training.
CMBE

CBME is a strategy that aims at achieving a more effective implementation of Primary health Care (PHC). The Faculty places great emphasis on CBME. This is in recognition of the great need for health professionals who are appropriately trained to deal with health problems and needs of the Ugandan population; professionals who are competent to implement the PHC strategies and other national health policies, and who have the right attitudes towards prevention of ill health, and the promotion and maintenance of good health.
