International Medical University (IMU)
« Reply #1 on: September 16, 2007, 10:06:08 AM »
International Medical University (IMU) is the pioneer private medical university in the country.
they have established a unique and innovative partnership programme with well-established medical schools overseas. This diverse international dimension of IMU will serve its graduates well and contribute to the progress of the medical and health manpower needs of every country.

The IMU also offers a pharmacy programme (BPharm), a pharmacy programme in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde, UK (MPharm), Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences or Community Health) postgraduate programme by research and the IMU Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) degree programme.

the uni's profile--

The International Medical University (IMU) was originally established as the International Medical College (IMC) in April 1992.

The International Medical University (IMU) started as an exciting venture in medical education in 1991. A team of academicians led by Datuk Dr Kamal Salih, Dr Mei Ling Young, the late Dr Saidi Hashim with the help of Professor Ron Harden and Professor Ian Hart, two world-renowned medical educationists, conceptualised the International Medical College (IMC). Professor Ong Kok Hai joined the team later. This was a unique educational venture established in line with the Malaysian government’s objective of making the country a leading centre of educational excellence in the region and providing more Malaysian students the opportunity to achieve their aspirations to become doctors and healthcare professionals.

The calibre of the medical educationists and the reputation of the Board of Governors initially helped lend credibility to the project. But it was the progressive, systems based, integrated medical curriculum that caught the imagination of the Partner Medical Schools (PMS), which wanted to participate in this innovative although somewhat daring project. After 21/2 years of study in the IMC, students would be able to springboard to any of the reputable PMS in the UK and Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, the
USA and Australia and receive the degree from the respective university.

The College was officially launched on 13 April 1992 by the then Malaysia’s Education Minister, YB Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Haji Daud in Kuala Lumpur. This was a pioneering effort involving a private medical training institution representing a totally new and innovative concept of international partnership for the twenty-first century. The IMC had the full support of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health. The institution also had the support of experienced and reputable members of the Board of Governors and members of the Academic Council which consisted of the Deans or their representatives from all the PMS which met at least once a year. With the help of Prof Ron Harden and Prof Ian Hart, an international search for the Foundation Dean started in 1992. An eminent professor of pathology, Emeritus Prof John S Beck from the University of Dundee was appointed the Foundation Dean of the IMC. Sir Patrick Forrest, Emeritus Professor of Surgery from the University of Edinburgh joined as the Associate Dean later. In 1993, the IMC took in its pioneer batch of 75 medical students.

In 1996, after the medical curriculum had run its full course and consolidated, the IMC felt it was timely to start a collaborative pharmacy programme with the University of Strathclyde, in response to the acute need of pharmacists in Malaysia. In 1998, the pioneer class of medical and pharmacy students graduated from the Partner Universities.

On 4 February 1999, the IMC was granted university status and became the International Medical University (IMU) thus providing an additional option for students to read the whole medical degree in Malaysia, the MBBS (IMU). The IMU Clinical School in Seremban took in its first cohort of 46 students in September 1999. The late YABhg Tun Dr Mohamed Zahir Haji Ismail, Speaker of the House of Representatives became IMU’s first Chancellor.

As the student population grew, the IMU moved from its campus in Petaling Jaya to a new and larger campus in Bukit Jalil on 1 January 2000. More PMS, particularly in Australasia and the UK then joined our consortium. Having established a reputation as a premier private medical university with high calibre international connections, the IMU strives to innovate in medically-related education by developing novel curricula, new ways of delivery and assessment. To remain the premier private medial university, the IMU must develop quality programmes and services of an international standard.

« Reply #4 on: September 16, 2007, 10:18:09 AM »
Admission to the IMU
Admission into the IMU is based on the academic qualifications set and recognised by the IMU and the applicant's performance during the interview which is an integral part of the selection process.

Intakes into Medical, Pharmacy & Nursing Programmes
New students are registered into the medical programme in February and August while the pharmacy course takes in new students in December (MPharm) and July (BPharm) of each year. The intake for Nursing is in July. The closing dates for applications are as follows:

Programme  Undergraduate Medicine  Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) Programme in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde  Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) (Honours) Programme  Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme
Intake  February / August December  July July
Closing Date  30 November (February intake)/ 31 May (August intake) 31 October 30 April  30 April

Results will be announced two weeks after each closing date, although early offers may also be given. Admission into the IMU is competitive and, therefore, no applicant is guaranteed a seat.

Admission Requirements
Students are normally required to offer Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at SPM or equivalent examinations. They must offer three of the four science subjects at STPM (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) or equivalent examinations which are recognised by the IMU Senate.
Academic qualifications should have been obtained during the first sitting of a pre-university examination or its equivalent which is recognised by the IMU Senate.
Effective 2008, all applicants for the medical and pharmacy programmes are expected to obtain at least an overall band score of 6.5 in IELTS upon submission of an application. However, students opting for the PMS option would be expected to obtain an IELTS band score of 7.0 or above prior to entering the matching exercise. The Ministry of Education stipulates that all students entering universities in Malaysia must sit for the MUET regardless of having other English qualifications. In addition to this, all registered students are required to sit for the IMU English Placement Test during the orientation week. International students are not required to sit for the MUET.
International applicants are advised to check with the Admission Counsellors on their eligibility to apply.
International students applying for the medical or pharmacy programme are required to check with the respective professional bodies in the countries they wish to work in, on registration issues.

Applicants with any enquiries about the acceptability of their qualifications should write to the Admissions Office, giving detailed information about their academic background, nationality and permanent residence status.

Application Procedures

Application forms can be downloaded from this website. Application forms may also be obtained from the Admissions Office on the ground floor of the IMU main campus. Applicants must ensure that the minimum entry requirements are met before submitting an application. Admission into the IMU is competitive and therefore, no applicant is guaranteed a seat.
For the medical and pharmacy programmes, a processing fee of RM300 (Medicine, Pharmacy & Postgraduate) for Malaysians/ USD 300 (Medicine, Pharmacy & Postgraduate) for International Students is required upon submission of the form. Nursing students are required to pay a processing fee of RM150 (Malaysians) / USD150 (International Students). This fee is not refundable regardless of the outcome of the application. All cheques or bank drafts enclosed must be made payable to "IMU Education Sdn Bhd".
Students applying into the medical programme must choose their clinical training option (IMU Clinical School or Partner Medical Schools abroad) at the time of application. Upon successful completion of Phase 1 (2 ½ years), students are then transferred to the clinical training option either at the IMU Clinical School in Seremban or the Partner Medical Schools (PMS) abroad, as indicated in the offer letter.
The IMU does not appoint any agents to recruit students on its behalf.

Compulsory Subjects
The Private College Act (Section 34(3) Act IPTA 1997) under the Malaysian Education policy requires students to attend a course of instruction in Bahasa Kebangsaan (National Language), Pengajian Agama/Moral (Moral and Religious Studies) and Pengajian Malaysia (Malaysian Cultural Studies). At the end of the courses, Malaysian students are required to sit for the examinations. Students must pass all the papers during their time at the IMU. International students are not required to take the compulsory subjects.

About the Interview
Apart from the academic qualifications, the IMU seeks additional information on applicants before a final decision on the selection of students is made for our various courses. Our oral interview process is designed to provide us with further insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates.
Interviewers will be looking for evidence that you meet our various qualitative admission criteria. These include your interests and enthusiasm in the profession you have chosen to enter into, as well as your motivation, communication skills and other traits related to the profession.

Knowledge of medicine, pharmacy or nursing will not be assessed during the interview. The interview panel would also assess your interest in current issues, your stand on "controversial" issues as well as on how you may respond to difficult situations.

For your interview, you are required to bring all the original academic certificates, wear formal attire and be present at least 30 minutes earlier before the scheduled time.

The result of your application will be mailed to you after two weeks (14 days) from the programme application closing date.

SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION, OR PAYMENT OF THE ADMISSION PROCESSING FEE, OR ATTENDING AN INTERVIEW IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF A SEAT AT THE IMU OR THE PROGRAMME YOU

« Reply #6 on: September 16, 2007, 10:27:10 AM »
The IMU strongly encourages its students to be involved in extra-curricular activities. This is to ensure that the IMU graduates become healthy individuals with varied interests. At the same time, there is a need to ensure that student life in the IMU is safe, comfortable and fun.

IMU Student Association
University students are leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, they should learn to accept and discharge their responsibilities effectively; even as students. The Student Association is an elected body that represents the students and organises activities for the IMU student community. Student Association representatives allow the student body to express their views on matters which affect student life at the University, including academic and examination issues as well as student recreational and accommodation facilities.

IMU Bukit Jalil - Student Representative
IMU Clinical School, Seremban - Student Representative

Co-curricular Activities
The IMU students form their own societies and clubs to organise various co-curricular activities. These include the Adventure Club, sports clubs, cultural and language clubs, dance and music, photography and so on. An annual IMU event is the mountain trip to Gunung Tahan, the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia.
Other annual events include the orientation of freshies, the IMU Cup, IMU Ball and Friday Night. The orientation allows freshies to feel that their seniors are their friends and that they are welcomed at the IMU. These annual events are important because they foster the spirit of camaraderie within the IMU.

A student lounge is provided on campus for various indoor games such as carom, chess pool and card games as well as for relaxation. There is a fully equipped gymnasium and a dance studio with sound system at the student lounge for use by all students. There is a games room for students to play darts and table-tennis.

Student Counselling
Experienced staff at the Department of Admissions and Student Affairs, and academic staff offer appropriate advice and counsel to potential students and their parents on various aspects of the University. In addition, information on the Partner Medical Schools (PMS) and living abroad are given by trained IMU staff as well as visiting academic staff from the PMS. IMU students can also seek the counsel of IMU academic staff at any time. The tutor-tutee system of the University where specific academicians are mentors to specific students is another mechanism of support for students.

IMU Alumni
Today, our graduates are either pursuing their studies in our Partner Universities in six countries abroad, or working as doctors or pharmacists in Malaysia and overseas. The IMU Alumni is established to ensure easy access and interaction among the IMU family around the globe. Communication is optimised through the IMU Alumni website @ www.imu.org.my for all alumni activities.

Dr Goh Hsien Ming joined the pioneer batch of medical students in International Medical College (IMC) in 1993. He completed his Advanced Diploma in Medical Sciences (1996) and subsequently continued his clinical studies in the University of Dundee. He completed his MBChB in 1998. Dr Goh Hsien Ming was the first Secretary of IMC Student Council (1993-1996). He is also the founding president of the IMU Alumni Association, which now has more than 1,400 members around the world. IMU has awarded the Young Alumnus Award to Dr Goh Hsien Ming in recognition of his outstanding leadership and significant contribution to IMU and the science of health informatics.
