Title: Ready Reference Of MUMPS.

Mumps.
SEASON:
Late winter and spring.
SUSCEPTIBILITY:
Anyone not immune.
SYMPTOMS:
1. Sometimes: Vague pain; fever; loss of appetite.
2. Usually: Swelling of salivary (parotid) glands on one or both sides of jaw, below and front of ear; ear pain; pain on chewing, or on taking acid or sour food or drink; swelling of other salivary glands. No symptoms at all in about 30% of cases.
CAUSE:
MUMPS Virus.
TRANSMISSION:
Usually 1 or 2 days (but could be as long as 7 days) prior to onset untill 9 days after onset via direct contact with respiratory secretions.
INCUBATION:
Usually 16 to 18 days, but can be 12 to 25.
DURATION:
5 to 7 days.
CALL the doctor for diagnosis; call back immediatelly      if there is vomiting, drowsiness, possible headache, back or neck stiffness, or other signs of meningo-encephalitis either along with or following the mumps.
TREATMENT:
Symptomatic for fever and pain; cool compresses applied to cheeks.
DIET:
Non-acid, non-sour soft diet.
PREVENTION:
Immunization.
RECURRENCE:
Very slight chance of  recurrence if only one side was affected.
COMPLICATIONS:
Meningo-encephalitis; other complications rare in infants, but can be serious in adult males.
