Title: Italy: Clinically dead Somali woman gives birth
Post by: Admin on October 05, 2010, 05:25:29 PM
A 28 year-old Somali woman in an irreversible coma due to a brain tumor gave birth this week to a 28 ounce baby girl, who is in good condition at the Santa Ana Hospital in Turin, Italy.

The father is calling the child “a living miracle.”

The baby girl, named Idil after her mother, was born premature at 28 weeks after doctors decided to perform a caesarean due to a worsening of her mother’s condition.

“This morning, after consulting with our team of doctors, we decided it was time to perform a caesarean,"  said Dr. Tullia Todros, director of the hospital’s department of obstetrics and neonatology. "The risk to the fetus was greater if she remained in the uterus than if we carried out the birth.”

“The baby girl is healthy, the caesarean was quick, lasting around 10 minutes. She is small but lively,” Dr. Todros said, adding that the baby is now in the neonatal intensive care, which is routine, as “we need to be cautious and wait a few days.”

The baby’s father, Issa, requested that the procedure be performed under anesthesia so that there would be no chance her mother would feel any pain. After the birth, he told reporters, “What am I going to say to my family when (Idil) grows up? That she is a living miracle!”

Doctors must now decide what to do regarding the mother's condition, as she has been in an irreversible coma since July. They plan to perform a number of tests to see if she is in fact brain dead before deciding whether to disconnect her from life support.

Issa said he had hoped that their eldest son who is nine would have been able to travel to Turin to say goodbye to his mother, “who will be buried according to the Muslim rite, since the difficult situation we face in Somali makes it impossible to even think about bringing her home.”

The case of Idil, whose name means “beauty and perfection of being” is not the only of its kind in Italy in recent years. In May in the city of Bergamo, a baby girl named Gaia was born at 33 weeks, after her mother had been in a coma for four months.
