Title: Why Medicine?!
Post by: Admin on September 19, 2007, 01:48:26 AM
Most people answer this question by saying, I want to help people. This is a perfectly legitimate response, but there are many ways to help people. Teachers help people. So do hospital administrators, social workers, entertainers, and undertakers. What is it about being a medical doctor that is so attractive? What skills do doctors need in order to be successful, and are those the skills you most enjoy using?

Going to medical school is not a decision to be made lightly. For one thing, it involves a substantial time commitment: 4 to 5 years of medical school plus additional years of graduate study (residency). Second, medical school may be very expensive.

Please be logic and tell me why MEDICINE?!
Regards
Dr.mahdi

lol ,This is a long thread, so I am going to jump in without having read every post , Geeljirr !  ;);D

Back to the original question:
I entered medicine a little before my 19th birthday (jumping education systems) - so compared to what I know now (which is not a lot but enough), I did not know very much about a career in medicine at all at that time.

It wasn't so much a question of "why medicine", I simply thought - why not?
Not everyone has a chance at med school.

A little dose of pragmatism:
Universities focus on graduating their students - the real question is, what sort of degree is going to get you a job?

Some issues can be analyzed to death.

Had I been older or "more mature", perhaps I would have mulled over things a great deal longer - thing is, I don't think the decision would change.

The universities don't think about your job, it depends on you.
for example here in Somalia, if you are thinking about money, holding bachelor degree is enough for you!!

Actually you totally missed my point. In fact, I was implying the opposite. In my comment, when I said Universities focus on graduating their students, I was talking about mainly the different degrees or faculties and to some extent the different students who are studying those different faculties in a University. In this regard or even in generally speaking, If Universities focus on graduating their students who are studying in their different faculties and worked their way how their students should graduate up to a certain level, for sure one will say they don't think about their student's job nor do they decide for them what sort of degree will get them a job .This was the point I was trying to make, without going into detail.

Peace !

because so much of what medication does for us in our heads, the patient doesn't know what they get but the researchers know who got the new drug and who got the placebo, and they can see what side effects are caused be the drug instead of the patients imagination, and how well it performs compared to patients who think they took it.

Studying medicine requires a serious commitment. Few people stumble across the idea of pursuing the subject late in life. It is very likely that you have always wanted to work in primary care, and that's not a fact that you should hide. When thinking about the reasons of studying medicine it is important that you do not fall into the following traps:

1. Avoid using cliched, prefabricated sentaces, such as, " I have always wanted to study medicine because.." or "medicine is my calling". It is recommended that you point to experiences that have led you to your interest in medicine.

2. Be as clear as possible on why you have chosen medicine, use real life experiences and take the opportunity to point out any circumstances that may have affected your academic results.

3. Outline any work experiences in the medical field. Remember that experience is very important, even voluntery work. The admissions officers will be seeking proof and evidence that you have carefully thought through your decision.

Medicine runs in the family
Many reasons for pursing medicine is that the immediate family work in the medical field. This is a valied reason, but, it is important that you do not sound adolescent. Remember that you need unique reasons of why you have chosen to study your course.

The patient's perspective
This is the most powerful reason for studying medicine. Many doctors, nurses and dentists work in areas that need regeneration and with people from all walks of life. That is why admissions officers like to read personal statements that focus on the patient. A unique patient experience will bring life to your personal statement.

Next: Learn what admissions officers are looking for.

Note: This guide is not intended to replace the advice of tutors, admissions officers, or teachers; Get Into Uni simply provides advice and exercises to help you write a compelling personal statement.

I'm always worried when I hear people say they're in the field of medicine for the money. I swear there are a lot of other things that you can be doing if you're only interested in the money.

I am sorry noone replied to your thread Ahmed.

I wouldn't know to be honest, I applied and got in, before this UKCAT and whatever stuff. There alot of medical forums from the UK http://www.admissionsforum.net/ (http://www.admissionsforum.net/) is one of them.

As for which med schools you should apply to, have atleast 1 or 2 medschools on your list, which are less oversubscribed if that makes sense. It is extremely difficult to get in to med at the moment...InshaAllah hope you get into your choice and above all qadr Allah....whatever He decrees you say Alhamdullilah

Salaam

Its funny , but there is more than 350 0other professionals in a health filed that can get you a decent job in the NHS , if we all apply for medicine i think we will still lack some of that other professions , and I'm sure indeed we will need that other experiences at back home..don't you guys agree?

I just discovered this forum while searching for somali forums and I had to join! I am a Med applicant and it's good to know that there are other somali students also applying.  ;D Am not very optimistic about my chances though due to the little relevant work experience I've done prior to sending my application. I rang up different departments of my local hospital and GPs so they can take me for work experience but it was to no avail. :'(

If you plan to take up medicine, you should not only do it for the money. If you do, then the help you give your patients later on will be solely motivated my the money you will earn.

I chose medicine because it is a blessed field in the sense that it is good for your aduunyo and aakhiro- plus helping people In need is a reality check for you as It reminds you of how vulnerable human beings are, and that It could be us in that position, so it keeps you humble..- If the money doesent make you arrogant..lol
Anyway, thats my opinion.

Nowadays doctors in Somalia work for MONEY, because a doctor can not work or support his patients without money for his basic needs. Know that, in Somalia doctors has no financial sources, so they alweys charge their patients for their health situation & for medical prescribtions. Thus in Somalia Its for Money for current time.

3. What are some good points that medicine has brought to this world.
4. Why is medicine used?

Please be reflective with your information and have fun learning!

Medicine, has so much benefits firstly if your doling it for the sake of Allah the amount of ajar you get adds to your credit points of aqirah, secondly having knowledge about your self makes you more astonished of how complicated beings we are and this could never have simply resulted without there being a God alimighty. You see how important the aspect of attain optimal health is, and one would never want to exchange it for anything. Health is wealth. I also want to make my parents proud of me. For getting this far in life, but impressing somali parents ARENT easy as many of you all know, and for me  I am having a very hard time in getting into medicines. Currently i am taking bio medical science but i am so clueless as to where it will take me. Does anyone know of any good jobs that can be attained through getting this jobs that may allow me to work with the humanitarian aids services?

When I was young, I wanted to be a teacher. Yes, a Teacher!
I changed my mind when I read a story about Google founders, Sergey and Larry. I decided to study computer engineering and become a brilliant hacker and Anonymous cracker (I wish I was)!
Yet, I changed my mind again after Hotel Shamo tragedy when my chemistry teacher who was injured in the site told us about the horrible scenes there. I changed from a Sabeer Bhatia into a Ben Carson, from a Stanforder into a Johns-Hopkinser, from a hacker into a healer, INSHA Allah.

MONEY! Shouldn’t be your motivator because Doctors make a lot money that is true but, they never have the time to enjoy, they work ridiculous amount of time, here in America Doctors are well respected but they have one hectic schedule, so the question is what is the point of having money if you don’t have the time? To me MONEY doesn’t cut it!
