An expert on mosquito-borne diseases says recent big tides have provided mosquitos with ideal breeding conditions in the Top End.
The Northern Territory has recorded a sharp increase in cases of Ross River virus in the 12 months to June this year.
Peter Whelan, a senior medical entomologist with the Territory's Health Department, says tides that peak at above seven metres allow mosquitos to breed quickly.
