Title: Blood donation helps donor's health!
Post by: IsseGole on March 06, 2007, 10:47:25 PM
A study conducted in the U.S. by a research group concluded that blood donation is effective in reducing iron stores in the body leading to better health specially in those with peripheral artery diseases.
It is also said to be refreshing the blood circulation and hematopoesis to donate blood once a while. The amount normally taken for donation is not sufficient to cause anaemia as many people are afraid of.
Researchers at the White River Junction, Vermont, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Dartmouth Medical School said they looked at 1,277 men and women ages 43 to 87 who had peripheral arterial disease, a common condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. The study lasted for six years.
Blood was drawn to promote iron reduction at six-month intervals from some of the patients but not from others. As a whole there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of deaths, heart attacks or other problems.
But when the researchers analyzed the results just for younger patients aged 43 to 61 they found fewer deaths from all causes in the iron-reduction group, and also fewer nonfatal heart attacks and strokes.
But donation should not be done just to lower iron stores, at least after other studies, and also in certain old age the iron stores are fixed and become irreversible to change. Also there is the dietary restriction and some treatments to lower iron stores in the body, which may cause, if elevated, Hemochromatosis and deposion of iron in many organs and tissues in the whole body.
Thank you and donate if blood is needed from you and dont be afraid, specially if you are under 60 years of age.
