PNEUMONIA.
(Inflammation of the lung)
SEASON:
Varies with the causative factor.
SUSCEPTIBILITY:
Anyone, but especially the very young, very old, and those with chronic illnesses.
SYMPTOMS:
Commonly, after cold or other illness, baby seems suddenly worse, with:
Increased fever; productive cough; rapid breathing; blueness; wheezy, raspy, and/or difficult breathing; abdominal bloating and pain.
CAUSE:
Various organism, including bacteria, myco-plasma, fungi, viruses, and protozoa, as well as insult by chemical or other irritant or inhaled object.
TRANSMISSION:
Varies with cause.
INCUBATION:
Varies with cause.
DURATION:
Varies with cause.
TREATMENT/DIET
CALL THE DOCTOR for productive or persistent cough; or if a slightly sick baby seems worse or has increased cough; CALL IMMEDIATLY OR GO TO ER if baby has difficulty breathing, turns bluish color, or seems very sick.
TREATMENT:
Symptomatic. Most cases can be treated at home. Antibiotics, if needed.
DIET:
Fluids; adequate nutrition.
PREVENTION:
Hib immunization for Hib infections; protection of susceptible infants against illness.
RECURRENCE:
Many types can recur.
COMPLICATIONS:
Riskiest for those infants weakened by other illnesses or low birthweight.
