Case (26)
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:28:35 AM »
Sahra 5 yrs old girl came to emergency room complaining of head ache and severe vomiting and neck stiffness. On the couch she developed convulsion.
O/E: she was drowsy febrile not pale or jaundiced. Heart chest abdomen were normal.

Questions:
1) What is the most likely diagnosis?
2) Mention one important investigation to confirm the diagnosis?
3) What results do you expect to find in the above investigation?
4) What are the preventive measures of the disease?

Asc wr.
    1.diagnosis is MENINGITIS.
  2. one imp inv is LUMBAR PUNCTURE.
3.Expeted result is BACTERIAL meningitis. over 90% are caused by 3 types 1. H.influenza type b. 2.meningococcus. 3. pneumcoccus.
  4.Preventive measures are:
a)Vaccines: Routine vaccination protects children from developing some types of bact.meningitis including that caused by H.influenzae(Hib vaccine) and Invasive pneumococal dis(PCV vaccine).  a meningococal vaccine is also available, but it isnt routinely recommended for young children. it should be though, for those heading off to live in dorms or barracks.
               b)antibiotics: for those close contacts.
c)breast feeding is some what ptotective against meningitis.
