Mental Health Counselor Job Vacancy: Heshima Kenya

Heshima Kenya is a nonprofit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya dedicated to identifying, protecting and empowering unaccompanied refugee minors, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education and advocacy programs.

Closing date: 11 Sep 2009

Location: Kenya - Nairobi

Heshima Kenya is seeking a Mental Health Counselor to carry out program goals and objectives associated with our case management services. The Mental Health Counselor will provide therapy services to unaccompanied refugee minors and at-risk women assisted through our Girl’s Empowerment Project, Safe House Program, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Initiative.

Primary Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall management, planning, assessing and implementing of the program:
Conduct ongoing assessments, counseling sessions and referrals with program participants.
Provide individual and group counseling sessions to program participants.
Provide mental health trainings to key program staff and volunteers.
Work closely and collaborate with key program staff on a weekly basis about specific cases, progress, and follow-up referrals and recommendations through the design and implementation of individual goal plans.
Participate in the design and implementation of program and project evaluation.
Write weekly case management notes and write and submit monthly and quarterly reports.
Participate in the design and implementation of program and project evaluation.
Perform other duties as assigned in the implementation of program activities.
Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Psychology, Counseling, or Clinical Social Work. Masters degree or equivalent required.
5-8 years of professional experience, preferably working with refugee populations and/or with refugee children and at-risk women.
1-2 years working at the program management level, including leading or assisting with designing and implementing projects.
Extensive experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions for people who have suffered trauma and torture.
Working knowledge of Nairobi’s refugee community, specifically Eastleigh
Must be a Kenyan citizen; preference to female candidates; knowledge of refugee language desirable (Somali, Amharic, or Oromo)
Skilled at carrying out program needs assessments and program development
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent reporting and organizational skills
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Must have strong organizational skills and is skilled at working as a member of a team.
