Institutionalizing Health Care Improvement through Temporary Returns of Somali Health Professionals from Finland (Phase 2)

Through the MIDA FINNSOM Health project, IOM and the Finnish-Somali diaspora will continue to support the rehabilitation and development of regional health sectors in Somaliland and Puntland (Somalia) which continue to bear the consequences of years of neglect, and a debilitating lack of qualified human resources.

In the framework of this project, up to fifty Finnish-Somali professionals will carry out temporary capacity building and mentoring assignments in local health institutions; transferring skills and experiences gained while working and studying in Finland. As a complement, Finnish health experts may on a limited basis accompany Somali colleagues in order to carry out specialized training sessions for which the know-how is not available within the Finnish-Somali health community.

The MIDA FINNSOM Health project is demand driven and based on priority needs identified by local authorities and project partners in Somaliland and Puntland. Such needs will be matched with available human resources in Finland. Furthermore, the transfer of knowledge, the creation of personal and professional links, and the promotion of bilateral institutional partnerships will serve to institutionalize the Finnish-Somali diaspora’s role in the reconstruction of their homeland’s health sector.

IOM places special emphasis on targeting female health professionals in the Somali Diaspora and in identifying gender-based gaps in the provision of health services in Somaliland and Puntland.

Project Duration:

The MIDA FINNSOM Health project will be implemented for a period of three years.

During the project’s first four months, IOM together with its partners will set up the projects operational structures and the guidelines for participation.

The remainder of the project will be dedicated to the facilitation of field assignments for selected project participants.

Interested candidates are able to apply for participation in the project throughout its entire implementation period. However, early application is encouraged.

This project is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affair of Finland
(Department for Africa and the Middle East)
