Ready Reference Of MEASLES (Rubeola).

Measles Rubeola.
SEASON:
Winter and spring.
SUSCEPTIBITY:
Anyone not already immune.
SYMPTOMS:
1. For 1 or 2 days: Fever; runny nose; red, watery eyes; dry  cough.     Sometimes: Diarrhea; swollen glands.
2. Tiny white spots like grains of sand appear inside of cheeks (Koplik spots); may bleed.
3. Dull, red, slightly raised rash begins on forehead, behind ears, then spreads downward giving red all over look.
CAUSE:
Measles virus.
TRANSMISSION:
Direct contact with droplets from 2 days before to 4 days after rash appears.
INCUBATION:
8 to 12 days.
DURATION:
About a week.
CALL THE DOCTOR for diagnosis RECALL IMMEDIATELLY if cough becomes severe, if convultions or symptoms of pneumonia, encephalitis, or otitis media occur, or if fever goes up after going down.
TREATMENT:
Symptomatic; warm soaks, dim lights if eyes are sensitive (but bright light not harmful).
DIET:
Extra fluids for fever.
PREVENTION:
Immunization (MMR); strict isolation of infected persons.
RECURRENCE:
None.
COMPLICATIONS:
Otitis media, pneumonia, encephalitis; can be fatal.
