Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) Spain is an international humanitarian Non Governmental Organization, operating in Somalia.
We are currently recruiting for the position of Nurse – Specialised (Anaesthetist), based in Jowhar, Somalia

General Purpose of the Job:
Carry out anaesthesia within the framework of MSF’s anaesthesia recommendations. He/she is expected to pay particular attention to hygiene rules and the management of pain.
Specific Responsibilities and Tasks:

General Knowledge of MSF and Safety at work
o Co-operation with the colleagues of own and other departments & respect specific rules and procedures
o Comply with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/when applicable) related to the job for the sites.
o Ensure all staff supervised by him/her complies with the health and safety rules / instructions of the supervisor for wearing protective gears (if/where) related to the job for the sites.
o Respect medical ethics at all times

Management of material and anaesthesia medicines
o Assess, prepare and follow up the patient pre/ intra/ post surgical procedure & surgical medication according to MSF protocol.
o Checking the correct functioning of the operating theatre before all operations Ensuring the tidying, cleaning and re-stocking of the anaesthetist station between each patient
o Supervising the hygiene and correct working order of anaesthesia material
o Drawing up pharmacy orders according to needs
o Updating the follow up register and traceability of tranquilisers with the nurse operating theatre manager

Pre-anaesthesia preparation
o Checking patients’ identities, operating indications and the presence of complete dossiers
o Preparing drugs and anaesthesia material according to the protocol chosen by the anaesthetics doctor.
o Helping with the installation of patients on the operating table & Installing material for tracking medical parameters
o Informing the anaesthetics doctor and surgeon of all anomalies in a patients’ states
o Watching over the availability of blood (of the right type), depending on the operation

Carrying out anaesthesia and surveillance during an operation
o Helping the anaesthetics doctor to carry out the anaesthesia or carrying it out himself following the WHO/MSF protocols and following hygiene and asepsis rules
o Ensuring hemodynamic surveillance and continued respiration and noting the parameters in patient files
o Alerting the doctor in the case of any problems. If needed, starting secured transfusions on the anaesthetics doctor’s prescription

When the patient wakes up
o Watching over the patient waking up & participate in the installation of the patient in the recovery room
o Carrying out an oral and written handover to the recovery room nurse and handing him/her the anaesthesia dossier
o Helping the recovery room nurse in the case of any problems

Additional Tasks:
o Filling in the anaesthesia register and the statistics sheet
o Intervening in support of the emergency department if needed
o Sharing on-call duties with doctor anaesthetists
o Respecting the deontology and confidentiality linked to his function and the rules of the association
o Participating in personnel meetings.
o Any additional duties assigned

Requirements:

Education:
• Secondary level of formal Education
• Nurse qualification is must

Experience:
• Nurse qualification, with anaesthetic diploma or Minimum 1 year training on the job by MSF

Languages:
Knowledge of English is preferred

Personal qualities:
• Objective, flexible, enthusiastic
• Organized and accurate in performing duties
• Ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural people
• Ability to listen, Diplomacy
• Willingness to travel to rural health facilities in Jowhar District.
