In Yemen this has become a problem of grave national concern and we have reviewed the evidence for an adverse health impact.

Not only in those certain areas of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula but also in the UK Itself the Khat is becoming more of public health problem.
There a number of public health and respiratory doctors lobbying the government regarding the status of Khat.
There was a big study several years ago which linked TB and time spent in Khat houses-Marfish.
Statistically it was difficult to show causation because there were confounding factors such as smoking.
The study was commissioned because of the high levels of TB amongst the Somali population. Example 85% of TB cases in the Royal Free hospital in 2006 was Somali patients.
So people don't loose hope, there are pressures on the home office from the NHS regarding the status of Khat or at least Marfishes in the Uk.
Now that being precisely what I was thinking: Aside from social concerns, the consumption of this drug especially in exclusive Khad houses would pose a public health risk whereby airborne illnesses could easily proliferate among the users/abusers.
I wouldn't be surprised to see enteric illnesses as a result either as I doubt the hygienic handling of these leaves from the farm to shipping to the distributors in the west.
Thus, if anything, its use should be highly regulated and Marfishes regularly inspected or it should be banned altogether from a health care prospective.
There you go: Khat chewing isn’t just an occasional social thing in our community where Khat chewers indulge when they are happy or just to have a sit-down, it’s a serious addiction and creates so many social problems (mention not required, I hope).
Its the main reason, why are society is so lazy and unproductive compared to other communities.
In otherwords, it is very sad to see a whole nation wiped away with a drug that seems to be getting more and more popular every day.
While I understand all that hu-ha about choice, when something becomes a national problem and the norm, where even children are subjected, then it becomes the responsibility of the government.
Kind regards,
