Dear yaxya,
I advise you to try the following ways to induce labor before sucking your patients' nipple....
Some of these are natural ways apart from nipple stimulation which accelerate the labor:
1- Walk: If she is having contractions but are not yet in labor, walking can help get things going, walking allows her hips to sway side to side, which will help bring the baby into position to be born. Also, by standing upright, she's using gravity to move the baby down into the pelvis.
Another plus: It usually feels good to walk when she is contracting. And of course, even if she don't go into full-blown labor, at least she is getting some exercise.
2- Stripping the membranes: This will help start the labor. this procedure usually feels like a vaginal examination, although it sometimes can be painful or cause cramping.
You put your gloved finger through the cervix and sweeps the amniotic membranes free of their attachment to the lower part of the uterine cavity, this process is believed to release hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which help to ready your body for labor.
3- Amniotomy: this artificial rupture of membrane will help induce her labor, after water is broken the lady may notice that she begin to have contractions or she may feel like her baby has dropped further in her pelvis.
4- Enemas: this causes the bowels to contract and could cause the uterus to contract, which will open and efface the cervix.
5- Nipple stimulation: Women can massage their nipples as a way to induce labor, this stimulation brings about the release of oxytocin, which is the natural form of pitocin, oxytocin causes contractions, which sometimes evolve into labor.
If the lady can't stimulate her nipple, her husband really can help her to increase the contraction of the uterus using the following techniques:
- Roll nipples between thumb and forefingers for 2 minutes
- Rest for 3 minutes
- repeat rolling/resting for 20 minutes (increase rolling to 3 minutes and decrease resting to 2 minutes for 20 minutes if inadequate contractions occur after initial 20 mins).
Nipple stimulation is useful after the baby is born to help the placenta separate from the uterus, or after the placenta is delivered to help the uterus contract and decrease postpartum bleeding, the same effect will happen if you place the baby on the breast to breastfeed (the sucking will make the uterus cramp).
Take into consideration when & where you should use these methods to induce the labor.
