To advocate for and assist individual refugee clients with medical service providers and to work with community providers to build capacity for refugee-friendly health care systems.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

• Work with Resettlement Case Workers to develop plans for serving Refugees with health issues beyond resettlement services.
• Assist clients with special medical needs by accompanying them or arranging accompaniment to medical appointments, ensuring that client understands medical condition, tests, treatment, and medications, advocating for needed services and training, visiting client in home when needed, being on call to assist with accessing emergency medical care, and assisting clients to understand use of services, and resources available.
• Train refugee clients to meet their own health care needs by teaching them to find medical providers on the bus line, use a calendar, make appointments, get prescriptions filled, keep a health notebook and communicate pertinent information to physicians.
• Alert resettlement case worker and/or employment team to major issues and document activities in each client file through timely case notes which reflect the status of each case.
• Confer with medical service providers on ways to improve interpretation services, provide information and education classes, and improve routine procedures and systems to be more usable and beneficial to refugees.

Qualifications:

• Bilingual Somali & English
• Ability to navigate the health care system and communicate the information to others
• Able to advocate for refugees with medical needs
• Cultural competence
• Computer skills
• Organizational skills with attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Able to work under pressure
• Shares World Relief’s Mission, Vision, Values & Statement of Faith
