Poliomyelitis Eradication 
 
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Ensuring eradication of poliomyelitis from Somalia through routine and supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) and maintaining the already achieved polio free status through high quality AFP surveillance system. To reduce morbidity and mortality from other EPI target diseases. 
Description of duties:
Purpose of the post:
To contribute to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Organizational context:
As part of WHO/UNICEF EPI/PEI team and under the technical directive of the Polio Eradication Team Leader and the overall supervision of the WHO Representative, the National Professional Officer/Polio, is responsible, in his/her zone, for supervising the implementation, reporting of activities, and advocacy of EPI/PEI eradication, together with all partner agencies operational in Somalia (comprising of UN agencies, international and national / non-governmental organizations, counterparts, and local authorities).

Summary of assigned duties:
Under the guidance of the Polio Eradication Team Leader and the direct supervision of the WHO Representative for Somalia, the incumbent will organize the following activities:
- In collaboration with local health authorities, partners and WHO national staff assigned to Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) programmes, prepare and implement planned supplemental immunization activities in the assigned zone.
- Together with the partners and technical staff, review and update zonal micro plans and other documents to ensure appropriate and fair distributions of resources to guaranty quality campaigns.
- Identify areas and reasons for poor coverage and develop a special plan that addresses refusals, inaccessible areas or nomadic population.
- Collect, analyze and use Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIAs) reporting and monitoring data for identifying gaps and recommending corrective measures.
- Support other immunization activities.
- Supporting Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance in the zone.
- Contribute to the achievement of the certification standards in relation to sensitivity, quality and timeliness.
- Participate in the recruitment of District Polio Officers (DPOs) and other campaign auxiliary workers that support polio eradication activities at district levels.
- Prepare monthly report to reflect activities conducted, progress made and constraints faced and recommendations for the way forward.
- Collect and collate daily security report from regions under his/her responsibility.
- Ensure that Polio Eradication Officers (PEOs) maintain daily contact with the District Polio Officers (DPOs) with regard to security in each region.
- Communicate any security incidence or concerns to the Polio team Leader.
- Maintain close contact with the Area Field security Coordination Officer in the zone.
- Ensure that PEOs and DPOs obtain mandatory security clearances before all travels within or out of Somalia.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
University degree in medicine, nursing or Para-medical sciences from a recognized university or college respectively. 
Skills:
WHO Competencies:

Functional skills and knowledge:
- Skills in training health workers on PEI/EPI activities standard operational procedures.
- Skills in planning, managing and coordination of PEI/EPI programmes.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, manage and adapt management style according to needs.
- Ability to build and motivate teams and work under pressure.

Other skills: Computer literacy. 
Experience:
Essential:
At least one year work experience in Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) activities in Somalia.

Desirable:
- Knowledge of WHO mandate and goals and or experience in UN organizations/agencies or international institutions.
 
Languages:
- Excellent knowledge of English and local language.
