Case Study.
« on: August 02, 2011, 04:52:51 PM »
Amina , an 18 month old toddler, is brought to you with a high fever, dysuria and offensive smelling urine.

1. What is the likely diagnosis?

2. What is the appropriate plan of action?

3. What 3 investigations will she need as an outpatient?

4. What treatment will she need if vesico-ureteric reflux is identified?

5. If renal scarring is identified, what follow up does she need annually, for life?

1. That's UTI
2. Urinalysis (Urine Test)
3. (I don't really understand what you mean "3 investigations needed as outpatient", anyway Antibiotics is needed to kill the bacteria and flow-up and monitoring are important to prevent the infection so it doesn't go to the kidneys and of course reinfection since she is taking antibiotics
4. Immediate antibiotic to prevent kidney damage
5. It depends on the stage and how severe is the damage of the kidneys but anyways she will need follow-up for development of hypertension, proteinuria and end-stage renal disease. I don't know!

But good luck
This terrible situation.
