Progressio (formerly known as CIIR) has been leading the way on practical international development issues for more than forty years. Location: Somalia - Berbera

Placement is to end by 31 March 2010.

The Progressio Development Worker will work alongside the General Assistance and Volunteer Organization (GAVO), a local NGO in Berbera, Somaliland, to assist in devising and developing an appropriate response to HIV and AIDS for youth.

The successful candidate should have a relevant qualification in youth work or another relevant discipline.

You should have a minimum of three years’ direct work experience on planning and implementing HIV and AIDS activities with young people. You should also have experience in training young people both formally and informally; of working on HIV and AIDS issues with Muslim populations, and of liaison with a range of different organisations. Experience or understanding of the role of advocacy in promoting change on issues relating to HIV and AIDS, and of working in a resource poor environment are also essential.

You should have the ability to transfer skills and knowledge through formal or informal training and skills sharing; proven knowledge/experience in organisational development and capacity building of local NGOs; commitment to team-building and consensus-led approach to work; the ability to promote a gender sensitive approach to issues relating to HIV and AIDS, and good interpersonal and communication skills. An understanding of the importance of good networking and information strategies surrounding HIV and AIDS; the ability to plan and implement own work; understanding of HIV and AIDS as a development issue; good command of English (spoken and written) and willingness/ability to learn the basics of the Somali language; willingness to travel in the region and within Somaliland, and cultural sensitivity in an Islamic setting are also essential.

Experience in and knowledge of regional and international HIV and AIDS NGOs and networks; of working with NGOs and/or government; skills in fundraising and reporting to donor agencies, and Somali language skills are highly desirable.
