Job Title: Nutrition Coordinator

Location: Ethiopia, Somalia, or Kenya

Reports to: Emergency Response Officer

Responsible for: Nutrition staff based at project area (district)

Relief International is a humanitarian agency that provides emergency relief, rehabilitation, and development interventions throughout the world. RI’s programs link immediate emergency assistance with long-term economic and livelihood development through innovative programming at the grassroots level.

Job Summary:

The main purpose of this position is to act as Nutrition PoC for RI relief response team in the drought-affected areas of Africa. The Nutrition Coordinator will assist in the ongoing management, continuing development, and daily supervision of all activities under RI’s Nutrition objective. The Nutrition Coordinator will support the Response Team leader on the planning and implementation of associated activities in community therapeutic care, SFP, OTP, nutrition education, capacity building and training, supply management, standardization of primary Nutrition services, protection Nutrition activities, collaboration with village health committees and with Ministry of Health and international humanitarian Nutrition actors. The PoC will work closely with response team to identify and give technical inputs on the nutrition related challenges. He/ she will also be frequently travelling to the field to facilitate the response team in the drought affected districts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Establish strong Links with Ministry of Health at federal and Regional level • To identify areas to facilitate implementation of Nutrition program with the MoH, Ministry of Local Government and other main stakeholders. • To meet with different stakeholders from civil society and government to assess the current situation in the region as well as review literature available on the care practices, FSL and WASH context. • Conducts community assessments to identify critical requirements for program interventions with a particular focus on IDPs, children, women, and vulnerable populations. • Under the guidance of the Nutrition Coordinator, maintains ongoing RI Nutrition activities in primary Nutrition, with an emphasis on CTC, Nutrition facility rehabilitation, capacity building and training. • Promotes and works to expand community capacity on Nutrition, with sensitivity to the political and cultural context; maintains a positive and constructive relationship with the local Ministry of Health and Village Nutrition Committees. • Assists the Nutrition Coordinator in developing Nutrition activities, with emphasis on response to perceived needs indicated by communities and beneficiaries. • Works with the Nutrition Coordinator to plan and implement emergency interventions in beneficiary communities as needed. • To plan and conduct community sensitization with key informants and other main communication channels. Assess needs in the identified locations with local authorities and health personnel (HR, materials, training, and rehabilitation). • To define overall Nutrition program implementation plan and conduct a baseline visit to all health facilities integrating Nutrition Program and evaluate training needs based on findings. • To define operational setup plan with different health facilities and start-up activities. • To identify community volunteers with local leaders/authorities in each program area and train community volunteers in identification and referral of SAM cases with MUAC to health centers. • To secure RUTF (supply & buffer) and other materials are available in locations program locations • To recruit and train RI technical team for the program implementation and follow up. • To provide ongoing technical supervision and on the job training to health facility staff implementing Nutrition program for continuous quality assurance. • To conduct surveys for each program area integrating the Nutrition Program. • To facilitate a peer review on different approaches implemented in the region for HEALTH & Nutrition Program. • To set up a monitoring and training system for Nutrition Program activities in the region. • Conducts and designs Nutrition activities with the utmost sensitivity for the safety and well-being of beneficiaries and national staff and with regard to the political context. • Provides capacity-building for national staff: technical support, organizing training, and preparing a training schedule for Nutrition staff. • Ensures that RI provides quality services that meet Sphere and other international standards. • Works with Nutrition Coordinator to provide input for all Nutrition and Nutrition-inclusive proposals, reports, assessments, and research in consultation with the Senior Management Team, Country Office, and Headquarters. • To define methodology and questionnaires for assessment on causes of Health & Nutrition program in the region. Analyze, compile and report on the data collected. • To define an integrated prevention strategy within Health & Nutrition program areas of operation and formulate proposal for submission to donors • To travel for RI, if necessary

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

This position demands a dynamic individual with a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a very demanding and fast paced and volatile environment.

• University degree in Social Sciences
• Minimum 3 years humanitarian or development experience, including significant work in managing Humanitarian programs in emergency or humanitarian contexts. • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, project planning, communication and time management skills • Strong understanding of humanitarian principles, emergency program management, and security management in high risk environments. • Demonstrated knowledge of grantee regulations and implementation experience of EC-USAid funded programs. Budget management experience. • Knowledge of humanitarian reform principles and has a clear understanding on policies involving the humanitarian action in the region • To understand how the following cross-cutting issues have been taken into account at all stages of program implementation so far: o Disaster risk reduction and Preparedness; o Do no Harm / Effects on the environment; o Gender; o Security of aid workers; o Participation.
